Grant Awarded to Secure Families Collaborative
The Secure Families Fund of the Community Foundation Sonoma County has awarded a first year grant in the amount of $550,000 to the newly formed Secure Families Collaborative. This Collaborative includes Catholic Charities, Vital Immigrant Defense Advocacy and Services (VIDAS), Legal Aid of Sonoma County, and the University of San Francisco Immigration & Deportation Defense Clinic. On November 1, 2018, the Collaborative started offering free legal deportation defense services to Sonoma County residents.
The Secure Families Fund Community thanks you for your support.
Immigration touches every Sonoma County resident. As children, parents, spouses, friends, classmates, employers, co-workers, community members or immigrants ourselves, immigration policy has a real and direct impact on our lives. Unprecedented aggressive deportation actions around the country are part of new federal immigration policy and have sent shock waves of fear through our local immigrant community. Impacts include reduced crime reporting, including child abuse and domestic violence, attendance drops in elementary schools, reductions in applications for critical child health and social services, and increased labor violations and housing discrimination. The new federal policies risk fracturing our community and have made the lives of the most vulnerable more uncertain and precarious. The health and economic well-being of our entire community has already suffered.
Immediate community collaboration is needed to increase local resources to provide legal services to immigrant families. If we wait until deportation raids occur in the County, it will be too late. Sonoma County non-profits are under-resourced and ill-equipped to address the increased legal needs of the community.
A county in which all families and residents, regardless of immigration status, feel safe, secure and supported by their communities through increased access to immigrant rights education and direct immigration legal services.
To raise $2 million over three years to sponsor a local non-profit partnership to add attorneys, paralegals, and other support staff to strengthen a critical safety net to keep families safe, informed and united, including:
Educating immigrants, service providers, and employers on immigrant legal rights;
Expanding legal representation and rapid community response following raids and arrests;
Helping families and individuals secure counsel for family preparedness prior to detention or deportation;
Combating housing and other discrimination against immigrant families;
Coordinating pro bono efforts of local volunteer attorneys and community members; and
Educating employers regarding immigration issues.
Community Foundation Sonoma County will serve as the fund administrator and will issue a request for proposals for a multi-year county-wide program. A competitively selected non-profit(s) then will be funded to implement a sustainable model integrated program to provide a range of critical services.
